Medication costs

Meds are expensive. Many pay over $1500 a month for the various PD and non-PD meds they take. That’s a hard pill to swallow…. To help defray the cost it's possible to get meds through Canadian pharmacies and average around $500 in savings. Now, with Medicare Part D it's no longer cheaper to get the meds from Canada. If you aren’t eligible for Part D and have little assistance in buying your medication then consider Canada. There are many Canadian pharmacy options on the internet so do your homework well and cost compare a few sites before choosing one.

My husband benefited significantly from Neupro until it was taken off the market. We were able to locate a supply from a website in Canada and the cost was significantly cheaper. If you want the site, just e-mil me.

I,too, have benefited from NEUPRO patch. Especially since I have developed negative responses to other Parkinson's medications, so have had to discontinue taking some, and have had to drastically reduce Senemet dosage. My kids purchase NEUPRO through Canada Drugs... which are mailed to me via United Kingdom. However, because of the burdens caused as result of the present economy, this has become a great burden to them. I have Medicare and Blue Cross Insurance. BCBS drug coverage will not cover medications purchased outside of USA. A lawyer appealed to them to cover the NEUPRO costs, but to no avail. I use the 8mg patch which costs almost $457 dollars a month (or for 28 patches). Is there some sort of program that can subsidize this purchased? Like most "Parkies", my med list is quite extensive for accompanying "issues" and frequent hospitalizations. Add those costs to the cost of the caregiver's home where I live, and that is a huge amount for me considering that my personal funds have been exhausted, leaving only my SS and small Company retirement funds to live on. Is (or are) there a source available to help absorb some of the costs of high cost medications like my NEUPRO patches. As long as it was available in the US, my insurance paid the cost. But after its withdrawal, they cease to cover it. NEUPRO has kept me out of a nursing home and a wheel chair. Without it, I will become totally dependent and immobile again. Sincerely, and hopeful, Kathryn

The ridiculously high cost for Neupro has in effect kept this excellent drug out of the US for many. The recall kept the drug out of the US for much longer than other countries. The reason for all this is that Neupro for some is a far better medication than other drugs which would incur a loss in sales ($). Since millions of Americans have Parkinson's disease and rest less leg syndrome, the US congress should conduct an investigation for the high cost of Neupro which many of their constituents need but cannot pay for.

I was diagnosed 18 years ago at age 40. I have had excellent results with Carbidopa 25/Levodopa 100. I have been on it for about 15 years and I am now up to taking two tablets every three hours. I am not always on time taking my medication, but it is a hassle to stop what you are doing to take medications! To make a long story short, my Neurologist would like to try me on Neupro Patches for consistent dosing around the clock. He believes the patch will take care of my break through tremors. I am very excited about trying the patch, but am afraid I will not be able to afford these patches. I am divorced and have Medicare, Parts A, B, and D, plus my disability. My Pharmacy is WellCare. My Neurologist told me I would have to call my pharmacy and Medicare for approval first. Has all above tried through Medicare, but denied? My Neurologist believes I will need possibly 14 - 18 mg. patches. Please help. Any suggestions appreciated very much. Thanks, Pat
