Tips For The Tip Jar You May Need To Be Two People To Operate Voice Recognition Software By Roger Beatty Like many Parkinson's patients I have difficulty with the fine motor coordination of my hands. This makes typing and handwriting very difficult and cumbersome. Since I enjoyed writing I decided to find a way to work around this shortcoming and discovered that there were some very good voice recognition software packages available. Not only did they take dictation, convert text back to speech, but also let you use voice commands to control the actions of common computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Excel and many others. There is quite a learning curve for both the user and the software as each gets to know the other. Not some insignificant amount of time is spent to train the computer to recognize your voice and pattern of speech. Unfortunately, like many Parkinson's patients, the disease affects my voice as well. In my case in the morning when well rested it's reasonably clear and the machine has no difficulty understanding me. However as the day wears on my voice becomes much more scratchy and somewhat weaker. The software no longer thinks I'm me and begins to write some pretty bizarre things. For while I thought I would just have to put up with this and then it dawned me that the software accepts multiple users. All I needed to do was train for a user called Mr. Roger AM in the mornings and a Mr. Roger PM in the afternoons. When Mr AM begins to write strange things it is time to toggle to the evening shift Roger and press on. The software packages I have knowledge are: 1.Dragon Naturally Speaking for the PC 2.Dictate for the Macintosh 3.E-speech from the PC Which is downloadable free from the Internet
