A good trip after all

06/19/2010

I have just finished reading Dr. Shaw's article, "Don't Pack Your Stress". I found the artcle applicable to my recent trip to visit family and friends.

Challenges I faced at the airport included feeling hurried while my body refused to coperate, struggling with my carry-ons, and wondering if I should explain again to my daughter-in-law that I was having dyskinesia in case I looked weird. While visiting, there was the challenge of eating out with shakey hands, fighting the exaustion brought on by trying to keep up the cpnversation, and resisting the urge to break down and cry when my off-time left me unable to shower properly.

Since returning, I have been dwelling on what didn't go right, and all the ways my PD made the trip more difficult than I had anticipated. After reading and applying Dr. Shaw's helpful thoughts to the events of my visit, I am now giving myself a pat on the back for finding the courage to make the trip at all. I did enjoy seeing family, I had a nice break from my daily routine, and I was never far from help if I needed it. Most of all, I have faced adversity and come home wiser and braver.

I guess it was a pretty good trip after all.
